What is Contact Improvisation?

Contact Improvisation starts with an inner listening, our relationship to the floor, then to one another, a partner, or a group dance through contact and touch. By tuning into one’s own body and the bodies of one another through touch and weight, we become more aware of the deep intelligence of our bodies discovering our individual capacity for freedom of movement through release and awareness.

Playing with momentum, relation gravity and being in contact, the dance that unfolds can be soft and gentle or playful or athletic. Contact Improvisation has been developing internationally since 1972 and started from the exploration, research and inquiries of dancers Steve Paxton and Nancy Stark Smith and many more. Though there are different styles and attitudes to the form, the pivotal aspect is being in contact and flow.
